Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a safe, topical liquid treatment used to arrest active tooth decay and reduce tooth sensitivity. It combines the antimicrobial power of silver with the remineralizing strength of fluoride to kill cavity-causing bacteria and harden softened tooth structure—without drilling, injections, or removal of healthy tissue.
How It Works Applied directly to affected areas with a small brush in just minutes, SDF creates an unfavorable environment for decay progression. Treated lesions typically darken to black (a permanent but functional change), indicating the caries has been arrested.
Key Benefits
- Highly effective at stopping cavity progression—often in one application, with reapplication as needed for sustained results.
- Quick, painless, and noninvasive—ideal for children, adolescents, and those with special needs or limited access to care.
- Low-cost preventive option that minimizes future restorative treatments and helps avoid pain or infection.
- Reduces sensitivity and supports better oral health in school or community settings.
Application Process
- The tooth surface is cleaned and dried.
- SDF liquid is painted onto the decayed area.
- It dries quickly—no special light required.
SDF is FDA-cleared as a Class II medical device for dentin sensitivity and widely used off-label for caries arrest, with strong support from the American Dental Association (ADA), American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), and evidence-based guidelines.
At Southern Peach Dental, we incorporate SDF into our school-based preventive programs to provide convenient, effective care—promoting healthier smiles, reduced absences, and brighter futures for students.
